Reproduction of the Heroic Figure of Ninja Racer: GPZ900R Custom

 8 min read

Moto Garage Ito's GPZ900R

This machine is equipped with racing parts for GPZ900R, which was sold in large numbers in the mid-1990s. Some of them are no longer available, recreating the Ninja racer style of that time. The original appearance has been retained and still maintains a calm atmosphere.

The front forks are noteworthy. They are upside down, but not stock. In fact, these forks were manufactured by WP in the 1990s. Since it was specially made for the GPZ900R and it was easy to install, it used to be the most popular suspension for racing use, as well as OHLINS. The rear shock is OEM from Honda CBR1100XX, but the linkage is a one-off. The swingarm is also a one-off made by OHNISHI HEAT MAGIC. ZRX1200R engine is fixed with titanium bolts to increase rigidity. Cylinder head was ported by Moriwaki Engineering to improve intake and exhaust efficiency. The carburetor consists of YOSHIMURA TMR and NOJIMA Engineering ST-4 power-up kit, increasing the output throughout the entire range. The exhaust pipe is made by BABYFACE, the silencer is Harashow. The intermediate pipe is a one-off by NOJIMA Engineering. Riding height is 5cm higher using seat rails, but overall shape was not altered much. If a number plate attached, this bike must be the same as 1990's Ninja racer.

Engine

The engine is ZRX1200R’s, and only the cylinder head has been ported by Moriwaki. The clutch cover is a Wheelie's limited edition with a Kawasaki logo printed. The inverted oil bypass kit is also made by Wheelie.

The oil pan under the engine has been replaced with a billet oil pan kit from K Factory for a clean engine area. The fins also improve the cooling effect.

Intake & Exhaust

TMR top cap has wrinkle painting. Spigot and drain bolts are anodized in gold. The funnel adapter was anodized in a special way, Kashima Coating. The titanium water pipe is a one-off.

The radiator, which looks like a racing radiator, was the same product as the one actually used in the Ninja Racer, but the manufacturer's name was not identified. The brackets and other parts are oneoff.

The exhaust system consists of a BABYFACE narrower exhaust pipe. It increases the power at low speeds. The intermediate pipe was a one-off made by Nojima Engineering, and the silencer was made by Harashow, or Harada Silencer.

The rear shock was also made by WP, but it is OEM part of CBR1100XX. The shock length and other dimensions were the same as those of the GPZ900R, but the adapter holes were wrongly shaped, so linkages were neeeded.

Chassis

The upside down forks was made by WP. In the past, other model's OEM forks were frequently used, however, this GPZ900R chose those of WP's in consideration of the frame balance.

Rearsets kit are made by PHASE, and the master cylinder of the rear brake is stock. It is buffed and polished to remove the black paint and make it look unified with the rearsets.

The swingarm is a one-off made by Onishi Heat Magic with a stabilizer added on the upper side. The wheels are GALE SPEEDpolished base, with spokes and other parts painted lime green.

The shock itself has been overhauled and, like the front forks, has been modified to accomodate the owner.

Handle

Bull Docker TAGOS Ninja throttle kit has a stock-inspired design. The Type R was chosen for its wide throttling. The switch box is made by ACTIVE.

Electrical

Since the engine has been replaced, other tachometer parts except for a panel were also modified, leaving the Ninja appearance.

Bodyworks

Urethane and seat surface were modified. The urethane is molded to the size of the rider's and another's hips, making the seat less fatiguing over long distances.
